"ข้าพเจ้าเป็นพ่อค้า"

เกิดในตระกูล "พานิช" บรรพบุรุษ ทำการค้า, ตัวเองก็เคย บัดนี้เปลี่ยนมาเป็นพ่อค้าทางวิญญาณ ในนามว่า พุทธทาส, เป็นลูกเขย ของพระพุทธเจ้า แต่งงานกับ วาณี โดยพิธีรีตองยิ่งกว่ามโหฬาร แต่ไม่มีใครรู้กันกี่คน.

ทำชีวิตโวหาร ตามแบบของพระพุทธเจ้า มิใช่ตามแบบประเพณีเก่า ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องทางวัตถุหรือทางโลก; กำลังมีกำไรเพิ่มขึ้นตามควรแม้ยังไม่ถึงที่สุด, ทำประโยชน์ตน และประโยชน์ผู้อื่น ให้เกิดขึ้นได้เป็นที่พอใจ ชนิดนอนเป็นสุข กว่าคนธรรมดามากอยู่เหมือนกัน.

หวังว่า ท่านทั้งหลาย คงจะรู้จักข้าพเจ้าตามที่เป็นจริงยิ่งขึ้น ให้ข้าพเจ้า และร้านของข้าพเจ้ารับใช้ท่าน ให้ดีที่สุด ยิ่งๆ ขึ้นไป, ตถาตา!
